Lessons from the Fastest-Growing Infrastructure Market in the US

As Data Center construction accelerates across the Americas, General Contractors are becoming significantly more selective in how they build delivery teams. This is not a broad construction hiring market. It is a high-performance, execution-led infrastructure environment where experience, stability, and delivery capability are non-negotiable.

General Contracting experience is essential

The strongest professionals consistently come from established US General Contractors, including: Turner Construction, DPR Construction, Hensel Phelps, Mortenson, Skanska, McCarthy Building Companies, Holder Construction, Clark Construction, and Whiting-Turner.

These organisations are responsible for delivering the majority of hyperscale Data Center capacity across the United States. With Data Center vacancy rates at approximately 1.6% in core markets, competition for proven delivery talent is extremely high.

Mission Critical and Data Center exposure defines market value

The US hyperscale Data Center market is currently valued at approximately $188 billion and is projected to reach nearly $291 billion by 2030.

This level of investment means professionals with experience in:

  1. Data Center construction
  2. Mission Critical environments
  3. Industrial EPC delivery

are significantly more transferable and highly valued across the sector. Importantly, this experience must come from delivery environments, not advisory or client-side exposure.

Execution capability is the key differentiator

In this market, success is defined by on-site delivery capability.

Strong candidates typically demonstrate:

  1. Site-based construction leadership
  2. End-to-end project ownership from mobilisation through commissioning
  3. Trade coordination across mechanical, electrical, and civil scopes
  4. Ability to operate in fast-moving, high-pressure construction environments

Roles that are primarily design-led, consultancy-based, or office-focused rarely translate into hyperscale delivery environments.

Stability is a core hiring signal

Given the length and complexity of Data Center projects, hiring teams prioritise professionals who demonstrate consistency.

The strongest candidates typically show:

  1. Long-term project tenure
  2. Around 3 or fewer roles over a 10-year period
  3. Proven ability to deliver full lifecycle builds

This reflects the reality of Data Center construction, where continuity of leadership is critical to project success.

Why this matters now

US hyperscale demand is accelerating at approximately 7–8% investment CAGR, but operational demand is increasing far faster due to AI workloads and cloud expansion. This imbalance is creating sustained shortages of experienced construction delivery professionals across the Americas.
